Description

We have a NexBot Robotics 322-010 3D Vision Camera installed on our R-20 series robot for a bin-picking application. For the past two days, the system has been failing intermittently. The camera appears to lose connection over PROFINET, and when it is connected, the 3D point cloud data is extremely noisy and distorted. This is causing the robot to calculate incorrect pick coordinates, resulting in failed picks or collisions with the bin. We are getting a recurring error on the main controller HMI, E-4112, which our manual indicates is a 'Vision System Internal Fault'. We have power-cycled the entire cell, checked the physical connections, and ensured the camera lens is clean, but the issue persists. This production line is now operating at less than 20% efficiency, and we need to find a solution quickly.

Symptoms

  • Distorted or noisy 3D point cloud
  • Intermittent PROFINET communication loss
  • Robot fails to pick parts correctly
  • Controller displays vision system fault E-4112

Resolution

Analysis of the diagnostic logs confirmed a persistent E-4112 internal fault within the NXB-SNS-322-010 camera's processing board. On-site troubleshooting confirmed the 60VDC power supply was stable and the PROFINET cabling was intact, isolating the fault to the camera itself. The symptoms, including the corrupted point cloud data, are consistent with a hardware failure of the imaging sensor. A decision was made to replace the unit under warranty. A new NXB-SNS-322-010 was shipped to the customer. After installation and configuration restoration, the vision system performance returned to normal and the production cell was fully operational.

Resolution Steps

  1. Received and analyzed customer diagnostic logs, confirming the recurring E-4112 error.
  2. Instructed the customer to use a multimeter to verify a stable 60VDC supply at the camera's M12 connector.
  3. Guided the customer to inspect the PROFINET cable for damage and test with a certified cable analyzer, which passed.
  4. Concluded that the fault was internal to the camera unit due to the persistent error and stable external conditions.
  5. Authorized a warranty replacement and created a shipment for a new NXB-SNS-322-010 3D Vision Camera.
  6. Assisted the customer with installing the new camera and restoring the previous configuration (IP address, PROFINET device name).
  7. Ran a remote diagnostic test on the new unit, which passed all checks.
  8. Received confirmation from the customer that the bin-picking application was running without errors for over 4 hours.
