ELC412-014 Gripper Unresponsive with IO-Link Communication Fault
Industrial Robotics & Maintenance Parts case CASE-00309
Description
We have installed a new NexBot Drives ELC412-014 Electric Gripper (SKU: NXB-GEN-ELC412-014) on our R-10 series robot. The gripper is powered on, and the status LED is blinking amber, which the manual indicates is a communication error. We are receiving error code E-3105 on the robot controller, pointing to a fault with the IO-Link device on Port 4. We have verified the 24VDC power supply is stable and within spec. We've also swapped the M12 cable with a known-good one from an adjacent sensor, but the issue persists. The gripper does not respond to any open, close, or position commands sent from the controller. We have tried power cycling the entire cell multiple times. The IO-Link master is a NexBot standard 8-port block. All other devices on the master are functioning correctly. We suspect a potential hardware failure within the gripper's communication module, as we've exhausted our standard troubleshooting steps for connectivity issues. Please advise on next steps or potential RMA.
Symptoms
- Gripper does not respond to open/close commands
- Status LED on gripper is blinking amber
- Robot controller displays error E-3105 (IO-Link Device Communication Fault)
- Device is not visible in the IO-Link master's device list
Resolution
The issue was traced to an incorrect IO-Link configuration on the robot controller's IO-Link master. The IODD (IO-Link Device Description) file for the NXB-GEN-ELC412-014 gripper had not been properly loaded into the engineering tool and transferred to the master. This prevented the master from correctly identifying the gripper and establishing communication. Additionally, the process data cycle time was set to a value unsupported by the gripper. Guiding the customer through the process of installing the correct IODD file and adjusting the cycle time to a supported value resolved the communication fault. The gripper is now fully operational.
Resolution Steps
- Verified with the customer that they had downloaded the latest IODD file package for the ELC412-014 from the NexBot support portal.
- Instructed the customer to connect to the robot controller's engineering software.
- Guided the customer to the IO-Link master configuration tool and had them import the correct IODD file for the gripper.
- After the IODD file was loaded, instructed the customer to re-scan the IO-Link bus. The master correctly identified the ELC412-014 gripper.
- Directed the customer to the port settings for the gripper and had them adjust the communication cycle time from 2ms to the recommended 5ms.
- Had the customer download the new hardware configuration to the controller and perform a power cycle.
- Confirmed with the customer that the error code E-3105 was cleared and the gripper's status LED was solid green.
- Tested gripper functionality by issuing open, close, and specific position commands, which were all executed successfully.
