Description

We are performing routine maintenance on our C-10 series robot and are using the recommended NexBot Robotics 733-004 Cleaning Solvent. Our maintenance protocol involves cleaning grease and metallic particulates from the wrist assembly (Joints 5 and 6). However, our technician noticed that the solvent seems to be causing a slight discoloration and hardening of the black polymer seals around the joint casings. We tested a small drop on a spare gasket and left it for 30 minutes, and the material felt slightly less pliable afterwards. We are concerned that repeated use of this solvent could degrade the seals over time, potentially compromising the robot's IP rating and leading to internal contamination. Before we proceed with cleaning our fleet of 12 C-10 units, we need confirmation that this solvent is fully compatible with all materials on the robot, including the non-metallic seals, or if we should be using a different procedure for those specific components.

Symptoms

  • Solvent causing slight discoloration on polymer seals
  • Reported hardening of a test gasket after solvent application
  • Concern about long-term degradation of non-metallic components
  • Uncertainty about correct maintenance procedure for mixed materials

Resolution

The customer's caution was justified. The NXB-GEN-733-004 solvent is a powerful degreaser formulated primarily for metallic surfaces and painted castings. While generally non-corrosive, prolonged contact can affect certain types of fluoroelastomer seals, such as those used in the C-10 wrist assembly. The recommended procedure is to use the NXB-GEN-733-004 solvent for the main arm and base components, but to switch to a 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) solution for cleaning sensitive seals and gaskets. This prevents material degradation and ensures the integrity of the robot's environmental sealing. The internal C-10 maintenance guide has been updated to reflect this clarification.

Resolution Steps

  1. Verified the material composition of the C-10 wrist seals from engineering diagrams.
  2. Confirmed that while the NexBot Robotics 733-004 Cleaning Solvent (SKU: NXB-GEN-733-004) is the standard for general cleaning, it is not the ideal agent for specific fluoroelastomer seals.
  3. Advised the customer to mask off or avoid direct spray on the seals in question when using the NXB-GEN-733-004 solvent on adjacent metal parts.
  4. Recommended the use of a standard 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) solution applied with a lint-free cloth for cleaning the seals directly.
  5. Instructed that the cleaning method should be to dampen the cloth with IPA and gently wipe the surface, avoiding soaking the component.
  6. Assured the customer that using this two-solvent method will maintain warranty compliance and ensure the longevity of the robot's seals.
  7. Submitted a request to the technical documentation team to add a specific note about this in the next revision of the C-10 maintenance manual.
