Positioning errors on R-50 Joint 3 after replacing timing belt NXB-GEN-721-004
Industrial Robotics & Maintenance Parts case CASE-00153
Description
We performed scheduled maintenance on our R-50 robot, specifically replacing the timing belt for the Joint 3 axis. We used the correct genuine part, SKU NXB-GEN-721-004. After installing the new belt and running the standard mastering procedure, the robot began faulting during production cycles. The primary issue is an E-2103 (Positioning Deviation Exceeded) error that occurs when the arm is moving at high speed. We have also noticed a distinct, high-pitched whining noise and visible vibration originating from the Joint 3 assembly that was not present before the maintenance. We have double-checked all mechanical fasteners and electrical connections, and they appear secure. We suspect the new belt may be defective or that our tensioning procedure is incorrect, though we followed the standard work instructions. Production is currently halted for this cell, so we need urgent assistance.
Symptoms
- Robot faults with positioning error during operation
- Visible vibration in Joint 3 assembly
- Audible high-pitched whining from the joint motor/gearbox
- Inaccurate tool center point (TCP) after repeated movements
Resolution
The issue was traced to improper tensioning of the new timing belt. The investigation concluded that the belt was over-tensioned during installation. Excessive tension on the NexBot Robotics 721-004 Timing Belt placed an extreme radial load on the Joint 3 motor and gearbox bearings, causing the audible whine and vibration. This vibration introduced minor oscillations that resulted in the encoder reporting a position mismatch versus the controller's commanded path, triggering the E-2103 fault. The customer was guided to re-tension the belt using the official frequency measurement method outlined in the R-50 service manual, which resolved all symptoms.
Resolution Steps
- Perform a full LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedure on the robot controller and manipulator.
- Remove the access panel for the Joint 3 motor and belt assembly.
- Slightly loosen the motor mounting bolts to release all tension from the belt.
- Reposition the motor to apply light tension and attach a sonic tension meter sensor.
- Gently pluck the longest span of the NXB-GEN-721-004 belt and measure its natural frequency.
- Adjust the motor position until the tension meter reads 135 Hz (±5 Hz), as specified in the R-50 maintenance manual.
- Tighten the motor mounting bolts to the specified torque and re-verify the frequency measurement.
- Reinstall the access panel, power on the system, clear all faults, and perform a new mastering/calibration of the robot.
