Description

We are performing the scheduled 8,000-hour preventive maintenance on our R-50 series robot, serial number R50-22A-89101. We ordered the standard NXB-GEN-713-001 O-Ring And Gasket Kit for the service. All gaskets have fit correctly, but we've encountered a problem with the J3 axis. After disassembling the J3 housing, we attempted to install the new J3 Axis Shaft O-Ring (FKM, 45mm ID) supplied in the kit. The o-ring will not seat properly in the shaft groove. It appears to be slightly too large in diameter, causing it to bunch up and preventing the housing from being reassembled. We have verified the part number on the individual bag inside the kit matches the kit manifest. The robot is currently disassembled and offline, halting production on our press tending line. We need to confirm if we have the correct part or if there is a known issue with this kit and our specific robot vintage.

Symptoms

  • J3 Axis Shaft O-Ring from kit will not seat in groove
  • New o-ring appears to be incorrect diameter for the application
  • Preventive maintenance procedure is halted
  • Unable to reassemble robot J3 axis without risk of seal failure

Resolution

Support analyst cross-referenced the robot's serial number (R50-22A-89101) with manufacturing records. It was determined that a mid-cycle production change was implemented for R-50 models manufactured after Q3 2022, which require a 44.5mm ID J3 axis o-ring (P/N: NXB-SEAL-092B) instead of the 45mm ID version (P/N: NXB-SEAL-092A) included in the standard NXB-GEN-713-001 kit. The issue was identified as a bill-of-materials mismatch for this specific robot vintage. The correct o-ring was expedited to the customer to allow them to complete the maintenance and return the robot to service.

Resolution Steps

  1. Verified customer's robot model (R-50) and serial number.
  2. Cross-referenced serial number against internal engineering change notice (ECN-2022-415) database.
  3. Confirmed that the robot's build date requires the alternate part number NXB-SEAL-092B for the J3 axis shaft o-ring.
  4. Created a no-charge sales order (SO-NC-98112) to ship the correct part to the customer via overnight delivery.
  5. Provided customer with the new part number and tracking information.
  6. Advised customer to discard the incorrect o-ring from the kit.
  7. Followed up with the customer to confirm the new part was received and installed correctly, resolving the fitment issue.
  8. Case closed after confirmation of successful robot reassembly and operational test.
