Installation Guide: NexBot Safety MD132-008 Multi-Axis Servo Drive 8kW

SKU: NXB-SRV-MD132-008 | Revision: 1.0 | Category: Drive Systems > Servo Drives > Multi-Axis Servo Drives

DANGER: Disconnect all power sources before beginning installation. Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures per OSHA 1910.147.

1. Required Tools & Materials

2. Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Verify the received product SKU is NXB-SRV-MD132-008 and inspect for any shipping damage.
  2. Ensure the control cabinet environment is free from excessive moisture, dust, and corrosive gases.
  3. Confirm the incoming power supply matches the drive's 480VAC 3-phase requirement.
  4. Verify that all upstream circuit breakers and disconnects are correctly sized for an 8kW drive.
  5. Read the full safety section of the user manual before beginning installation.
  6. Ensure adequate clearance around the drive's dimensions (280 x 110 x 250 mm) for proper airflow and heat dissipation.

3. Installation Procedure

Step 1: Step 1: Mount the Drive

Securely mount the 5.8 kg NexBot Safety MD132-008 drive vertically to the cabinet backplane using four M6 screws. Ensure the unit is level and there is at least 100mm of clearance above and below for ventilation.

Warning: Ensure the mounting panel is properly grounded and can support the weight of the drive. Do not mount the drive horizontally or upside down as this will impede cooling.

Step 2: Step 2: Connect Protective Earth (PE)

Connect a properly sized grounding wire from the main cabinet ground bus to the PE terminal on the drive. This is the first electrical connection to be made and the last to be removed.

Warning: A missing or improper ground connection creates a severe shock hazard and may lead to equipment damage.

Step 3: Step 3: Connect 3-Phase AC Input Power

Connect the incoming 480VAC 3-phase power lines to the L1, L2, and L3 terminals on the drive. Use appropriately sized wiring and torque the terminal screws to the specification listed on the drive housing.

Warning: Ensure main power is locked out and tagged out (LOTO) before making any power connections. Verify phase sequence if required by the application.

Step 4: Step 4: Connect DC Bus (if applicable)

If using a shared DC bus architecture, connect the DC+ and DC- terminals to the common bus. Ensure correct polarity is observed to prevent catastrophic failure.

Warning: Never connect the DC bus while the drive or bus supply is energized. Incorrect polarity will cause immediate and severe damage.

Step 5: Step 5: Connect Servo Motors

Connect the motor power cables for each axis to the corresponding U, V, and W output terminals (e.g., U1/V1/W1 for Axis 1). Connect the motor brake wires to the BR terminals if applicable.

Step 6: Step 6: Connect Motor Encoders

Connect the encoder feedback cables from each servo motor to the designated encoder ports on the front of the drive. Ensure the connectors are fully seated and secured.

Warning: Use only shielded encoder cables to prevent noise interference which can cause position errors.

Step 7: Step 7: Connect EtherCAT Communication

Connect the incoming EtherCAT cable to the X1 IN port and the outgoing cable to the next device in the chain to the X2 OUT port. Use shielded CAT5e or better cabling.

Step 8: Step 8: Connect Safety I/O (STO)

Wire the safety circuit, such as an emergency stop relay, to the Safe Torque Off (STO) terminals on the drive. This connection is critical for implementing safety functions.

Warning: The STO function must be wired and tested by qualified personnel in accordance with machine safety standards (e.g., ISO 13849-1).

4. Post-Installation Verification

  1. Double-check all wiring connections for tightness and correctness against the wiring diagram.
  2. Verify that all foreign objects, tools, and wire scraps have been removed from the cabinet and the drive.
  3. Use a multimeter to confirm input voltage is within the specified range before applying power.
  4. Check for short circuits between power phases and ground.
  5. Ensure all cabinet doors are closed and secured.
  6. Confirm that the machine's emergency stop circuit is functional before enabling the drive.
