Installation Guide: NexBot Robotics ELC412-016 Electric Gripper 16mm Stroke

SKU: NXB-GEN-ELC412-016 | Revision: 1.0 | Category: End-of-Arm Tooling > Grippers > Electric Grippers

DANGER: Disconnect all power sources before beginning installation. Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures per OSHA 1910.147.

1. Required Tools & Materials

2. Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Verify the robot arm flange mounting pattern is compatible with the ELC412-016 gripper.
  2. Confirm the power supply can deliver a stable 24VDC (+/- 10%) at a minimum of 2A.
  3. Inspect the gripper for any signs of damage that may have occurred during shipping.
  4. Ensure the M12 5-pin connecting cable is the correct length and free of defects.
  5. Prepare the IO-Link IODD file for the ELC412-016 for upload to the IO-Link Master.
  6. Review the robot's payload capacity to ensure it can support the gripper's 1.2 kg weight plus the maximum workpiece weight.

3. Installation Procedure

Step 1: Mechanical Mounting

Securely attach the ELC412-016 gripper to the robot arm flange using the provided mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts in a star pattern to the recommended torque specification found in the product datasheet to ensure an even and secure fit.

Warning: Ensure the robot is powered down and in a safe, locked position before mounting. The gripper weighs 1.2 kg; use proper lifting techniques to avoid injury or damage.

Step 2: Electrical Power Connection

Connect the 24VDC power and 0V (GND) wires to the designated pins on the M12 connector. Verify the polarity is correct using a multimeter before applying power to the system.

Warning: Incorrect voltage or reverse polarity can cause permanent damage to the gripper's internal electronics. Double-check all wiring before energizing the circuit.

Step 3: IO-Link Communication Connection

Connect the IO-Link signal wire (C/Q) to the corresponding pin on the M12 connector, which then connects to your IO-Link Master. Ensure the cable is securely fastened and has adequate strain relief.

Step 4: Install Gripper Fingers

Mount the custom or standard gripper fingers to the jaws. Ensure the fingers are aligned correctly and do not impede the full 16mm stroke of the gripper. Fasten securely but do not overtighten.

Warning: Keep hands and loose clothing clear of the gripper jaws during any powered operation, even when moving slowly.

Step 5: Initial Power-Up

Apply 24VDC power to the gripper. Observe the status LED on the gripper body for indications of a successful boot sequence. The LED should turn to a solid green color to indicate normal operation.

Warning: Stand clear of the robot's work envelope during the initial power-up. Be prepared to activate the emergency stop if any unexpected motion occurs.

Step 6: IO-Link Configuration

Using your IO-Link Master's software interface, establish communication with the ELC412-016. Upload the IODD file if required and configure basic parameters such as gripping force limits and speed.

Step 7: Perform Homing Sequence

Initiate the gripper's homing sequence via an IO-Link command. This procedure calibrates the jaw positions and is required for accurate position control. The jaws will fully open and close to find their mechanical limits.

Warning: Ensure the area between the gripper fingers is completely clear of obstacles, tools, or personnel before starting the homing sequence.

4. Post-Installation Verification

  1. Verify stable IO-Link communication is established and process data is being updated.
  2. Command the gripper to several positions within its 16mm stroke to confirm smooth, unimpeded motion.
  3. Test the gripping force control by setting different force values and gently testing the grip on a sample part.
  4. Check for any fault codes or diagnostic messages reported by the gripper via the IO-Link Master.
  5. Run the gripper through a slow-speed automated cycle to ensure all commands are executed correctly.
  6. Confirm that the IP54-rated M12 connector is fully seated and tightened to protect against ingress.
