Installation Guide: NexBot Drives 832-006 Dowel Pin And Key Set

SKU: NXB-GEN-832-006 | Revision: 1.0 | Category: Accessories & Mounting > Fasteners & Hardware > Dowel Pins & Keys

DANGER: Disconnect all power sources before beginning installation. Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures per OSHA 1910.147.

1. Required Tools & Materials

2. Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Verify the contents of the NexBot Drives 832-006 Dowel Pin And Key Set match the service manual's requirements for the specific joint or assembly.
  2. Inspect each dowel pin and shaft key for any signs of shipping damage, corrosion, or manufacturing defects.
  3. Thoroughly clean the receiving holes, shafts, and keyways on the robot components, ensuring they are free of old lubricants, metal shavings, and debris.
  4. Measure the diameter of the receiving hole and the width of the keyway to ensure they are within the specified tolerance for a proper interference or transition fit.
  5. Carefully check the receiving holes and keyways for any burrs or sharp edges; gently remove them with a deburring tool if found.
  6. Ensure the robot or machine is in a de-energized, zero-energy state (LOTO) before beginning any component installation.

3. Installation Procedure

Step 1: Component Preparation and Cleaning

Wipe down the selected dowel pin or shaft key from the 832-006 set with a lint-free cloth and approved solvent. Ensure the component is completely dry and free of any oils or particulates before proceeding.

Step 2: Dowel Pin Alignment

Carefully align the dowel pin with the corresponding holes in the two components to be joined. The pin should be perfectly perpendicular to the surface of the component to prevent binding or damage during insertion.

Warning: Never attempt to install a pin at an angle. This can damage the pin and the receiving hole, compromising alignment accuracy.

Step 3: Dowel Pin Insertion

Using a small arbor press, apply steady, even pressure to press the dowel pin into the hole until it is seated at the correct depth. If a press is unavailable, use a pin punch and soft-faced mallet to gently tap the pin into place.

Warning: Excessive force can cause the hardened pin to fracture or damage the component. If significant resistance is met, stop and re-inspect for burrs or misalignment.

Step 4: Shaft Key Trial Fit

Perform a trial fit of the selected shaft key into the keyway on the motor or drive shaft. The key should fit snugly without needing to be forced, but should not have excessive side-to-side play.

Step 5: Shaft Key Installation

Insert the shaft key into the keyway, ensuring it is parallel to the shaft's axis. Gently tap it with a soft-faced mallet if necessary to ensure it is fully seated along the bottom of the keyway.

Warning: An improperly seated key can lead to component wobble, vibration, and eventual failure of the key or shaft.

Step 6: Mating Component Assembly

Align the keyway of the mating component (e.g., gear, pulley, coupling) with the installed shaft key. Slide the component onto the shaft, ensuring the key engages smoothly into the component's keyway.

Step 7: Final Seating Verification

Confirm that all components are fully seated against their respective mounting faces or shoulders. There should be no gaps, and the assembled joint should feel solid and secure.

4. Post-Installation Verification

  1. Verify that dowel pins are seated to their specified depth and are flush with the component surface where required.
  2. Check that the shaft key is fully engaged in both the shaft and the mating component's keyway.
  3. Gently attempt to rock the newly installed component to check for any looseness or play; there should be none.
  4. If applicable, use a dial indicator to check the runout of the mounted component to ensure it meets operational tolerances.
  5. Visually inspect the assembly area for any new metal shavings or debris created during the installation process and clean as needed.
  6. Before returning the system to service, manually actuate the joint or rotate the shaft to confirm smooth, unimpeded motion.
