1. Required Tools & Materials
2. Pre-Installation Checks
- Verify the received part is SKU NXB-GEN-821-012 and inspect for any shipping damage like cracks or deep scratches.
- Ensure the robot is powered down and a certified Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedure has been completed.
- Maneuver the robot arm to a position that provides safe and unobstructed access to the target joint.
- Thoroughly clean the robot joint's mounting surfaces, removing all oil, grease, and debris.
- Confirm all required tools and hardware (including fasteners supplied with the cover) are present.
- Review the specific robot model's service manual for any unique considerations regarding joint access.
3. Installation Procedure
Step 1: Prepare Robot and Work Area
With the robot in a LOTO state, position the arm for optimal access to the joint. Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free of obstructions.
Warning: Failure to apply LOTO procedures can result in unexpected robot movement, leading to severe injury or death.
Step 2: Clean Mounting Surfaces
Using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth, meticulously clean the surfaces on the robot joint where the cover will be seated. A clean, dry surface is critical for achieving the IP65-rated seal.
Step 3: Separate Cover Halves
The NexBot Safety 821-012 Joint Cover is a two-piece clamshell design. Carefully separate the top and bottom halves. Inspect the integrated sealing gasket for any defects or debris.
Step 4: Position Bottom Half
Place the bottom half of the cover around the lower portion of the joint. Align the mounting holes on the cover with the corresponding threaded holes on the robot frame.
Warning: Do not pinch any cables or pneumatic lines between the cover and the robot frame.
Step 5: Position Top Half and Insert Fasteners
Place the top half of the cover onto the bottom half, ensuring the sealing gasket seats correctly along the entire seam. Loosely insert all supplied fasteners by hand to ensure proper thread engagement.
Step 6: Systematically Tighten Fasteners
Using a hex key, tighten the fasteners in a star or crisscross pattern to ensure the cover is drawn down evenly. Bring them to a snug-tight condition before final torquing.
Step 7: Torque Fasteners to Specification
Using a calibrated torque wrench, tighten each fastener to the specification listed in the robot's service manual. This ensures the gasket is properly compressed without damaging the cover or threads.
Warning: Overtightening can crack the cover's mounting flanges or strip threads. Under-tightening will compromise the IP65 seal.
Step 8: Inspect Seam and Fitment
Visually inspect the entire perimeter of the installed cover. The seam between the two halves should be uniform with no visible gaps, confirming the integrity of the seal.
4. Post-Installation Verification
- Double-check that all fasteners have been torqued to the correct specification.
- Gently attempt to move the cover by hand to ensure it is securely mounted and has no play.
- With power still off, manually articulate the joint through its full range of motion to confirm the cover does not cause any binding or interference.
- Visually confirm that all nearby cables and hoses have adequate clearance and are not being pinched or stretched by the cover.
- After removing LOTO and powering on the robot, run a slow-speed test program that exercises the joint's full axis range.
- Update the robot's maintenance log with the date of installation and the part SKU (NXB-GEN-821-012).
