Installation Guide: NexBot Robotics 722-009 Hardened Steel Pulley and Sprocket Set

SKU: NXB-GEN-722-009 | Revision: 1.0 | Category: Wear Parts & Consumables > Belts & Timing Components > Pulleys & Sprockets

DANGER: Disconnect all power sources before beginning installation. Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures per OSHA 1910.147.

1. Required Tools & Materials

2. Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Verify the received package contains SKU NXB-GEN-722-009 and that both the pulley and sprocket are present.
  2. Inspect the new components for any signs of shipping damage, such as nicks, burrs, or cracks on the teeth.
  3. Ensure the robotic system is fully powered down and all energy sources are isolated using approved Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  4. Consult the specific robot model's service manual for joint disassembly procedures and fastener torque specifications.
  5. Confirm the work area is clean, well-lit, and all necessary tools and materials are readily available.
  6. Measure the motor and driven shafts with calipers to ensure they match the bore specifications of the new pulley and sprocket.

3. Installation Procedure

Step 1: Access Target Joint Assembly

Following the robot's service manual, carefully remove the necessary housing panels and covers to expose the joint containing the pulley and sprocket set to be replaced.

Warning: Ensure all stored mechanical or pneumatic energy in the system has been safely discharged before removing covers.

Step 2: Release Belt Tension

Locate the belt tensioning mechanism for the target joint. Loosen the tensioner sufficiently to allow the timing belt to be slipped off the pulley and sprocket without force.

Step 3: Remove Old Pulley and Sprocket

Loosen the set screws or mounting bolts securing the old components to their shafts. Use a gear puller to gently remove the pulley and sprocket, taking care not to damage the shafts or adjacent bearings.

Warning: Never use a hammer or pry bar to remove components. Doing so can damage sensitive encoders, bearings, or shafts, leading to costly repairs.

Step 4: Clean and Inspect Shafts

Thoroughly clean the motor and driven shafts with a lint-free wipe and isopropyl alcohol. Inspect the shafts and keyways for any scoring, burrs, or signs of wear that could impede proper fitting.

Step 5: Install New 722-009 Components

Slide the new sprocket and pulley from the 722-009 set onto their respective shafts, ensuring any keys are properly seated in their keyways. Do not mix these components with parts from other sets.

Step 6: Align and Secure Components

Use a laser alignment tool or a precision straight edge across the faces of the pulley and sprocket to ensure they are perfectly coplanar. Once aligned, tighten the set screws or mounting bolts to the torque value specified in the robot's service manual.

Warning: Improper alignment is a primary cause of premature belt wear and positioning errors.

Step 7: Reinstall and Tension Timing Belt

Fit the timing belt over the new components. Adjust the tensioning mechanism according to the manufacturer's specification, typically measured by belt deflection force or frequency.

Warning: Over-tensioning the belt will cause excessive load on motor bearings, leading to premature failure. Under-tensioning can cause belt skipping and loss of position.

Step 8: Reassemble System Covers

Reinstall all protective covers and panels that were removed. Ensure all fasteners are securely tightened and no tools or materials are left inside the robot.

4. Post-Installation Verification

  1. With power still off, manually move the joint through its entire range of motion to feel for any binding, rubbing, or abnormal resistance.
  2. After removing LOTO devices and restoring power, jog the affected axis at low speed and listen for any unusual noises like whining or clicking.
  3. Execute the robot's homing or calibration routine to verify that the new components have not affected its positional accuracy.
  4. Run a short test program and observe the timing belt to ensure it is tracking correctly in the center of the pulley and sprocket.
  5. After a 15-minute operational test, power down and check the motor and bearing housings for temperatures significantly higher than normal.
  6. Update the equipment's maintenance log with the date of replacement, robot's operational hours, and the SKU NXB-GEN-722-009.
