Installation Guide: NexBot Robotics 712-010 Shaft Seal 45x62x8mm NBR
SKU: NXB-GEN-712-010 | Revision: 1.0 | Category: Wear Parts & Consumables > Bearings & Seals > Shaft Seals
DANGER: Disconnect all power sources before beginning installation.
Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures per OSHA 1910.147.
1. Required Tools & Materials
2. Pre-Installation Checks
- Verify the robot is powered down and all energy sources are isolated using LOTO procedures.
- Confirm the replacement part number is NXB-GEN-712-010 and visually inspect the new seal for any defects or damage from shipping.
- Check the seal's material (NBR) for compatibility with the system's specified lubricant and operating temperature.
- Prepare a clean, organized workspace to prevent contamination of the robot joint internals during the procedure.
- Review the specific robot model's service manual for joint disassembly and reassembly torque specifications.
- Ensure the shaft and housing bore are free from any pre-existing damage, scoring, or corrosion.
3. Installation Procedure
Step 1: Step 1: Isolate and De-energize
Ensure the robot and all related equipment are fully de-energized and locked out according to standard safety procedures. Verify zero energy state before proceeding with any mechanical work.
Warning: Failure to properly de-energize the system can result in unexpected movement, leading to severe injury or death.
Step 2: Step 2: Disassemble Joint Housing
Carefully remove the necessary covers and components to gain access to the failed or scheduled replacement seal. Place all hardware in a labeled container to ensure correct reassembly.
Step 3: Step 3: Remove Old Seal
Using a dedicated seal puller, carefully extract the old 712-010 seal from the housing bore. If a puller is not available, a soft drift may be used to carefully tap it out from the opposite side, ensuring not to strike or damage the housing surface.
Warning: Do not use a screwdriver or other sharp tool to pry out the seal, as this can scratch the housing bore, leading to a poor seal and subsequent leaks.
Step 4: Step 4: Inspect and Clean Surfaces
Thoroughly clean the shaft and the housing bore with an approved solvent and a lint-free cloth. Inspect the shaft surface for any burrs, nicks, or grooves that could damage the new seal lip. Polish out any minor imperfections if necessary.
Step 5: Step 5: Lubricate New Seal
Apply a thin, clean film of the specified system lubricant to the outer diameter and the sealing lip of the new NXB-GEN-712-010 seal. This aids in installation and provides initial lubrication upon startup.
Warning: Using an incompatible lubricant can cause the NBR material to swell or degrade, leading to premature failure.
Step 6: Step 6: Position the New Seal
Carefully place the new seal into the housing bore, ensuring the sealing lip is oriented correctly. The lip should always face towards the medium being sealed in (i.e., the lubricant).
Step 7: Step 7: Press-Fit the Seal
Using a seal press or a driver with an outer diameter slightly smaller than the 62mm seal OD, press the seal squarely into the bore until it is seated at the correct depth. Apply force only to the rigid outer metal case of the seal.
Warning: Never strike the seal directly with a hammer. Applying uneven pressure can deform the seal and cause immediate failure.
Step 8: Step 8: Reassemble Components
Reinstall all previously removed components in reverse order of disassembly. Use a calibrated torque wrench to tighten all fasteners to the specifications listed in the robot's service manual.
4. Post-Installation Verification
- Remove all tools and debris from the work area.
- Carefully remove LOTO devices and restore power to the robot according to established procedures.
- Operate the affected joint at a low speed and observe for any signs of lubricant leakage around the new seal.
- Listen for any abnormal noises such as grinding or whining, which could indicate a problem with the installation or other components.
- After a brief run-in period, check the operating temperature of the joint housing to ensure it is within normal parameters.
- Document the replacement in the equipment maintenance log, noting the date and operational hours.
