Installation Guide: NexBot Drives 221-018 Teach Pendant

SKU: NXB-GEN-221-018 | Revision: 1.0 | Category: Controllers & Software > Teach Pendants & HMI > Teach Pendants

DANGER: Disconnect all power sources before beginning installation. Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures per OSHA 1910.147.

1. Required Tools & Materials

2. Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Verify the main power to the robot controller is disconnected and locked-out/tagged-out (LOTO).
  2. Inspect the NexBot Drives 221-018 Teach Pendant and its cable for any signs of shipping damage.
  3. Confirm the robot controller's connection port is clean, dry, and free of debris.
  4. Ensure the planned cable route is free from pinch points, sharp edges, and sources of high electromagnetic interference.
  5. Verify the mounting location for the pendant holder provides clear, ergonomic access for the operator without creating a trip hazard.
  6. Check the robot controller documentation to confirm compatibility and identify the correct HMI connection port.

3. Installation Procedure

Step 1: Mount the Pendant Holder

Secure the provided teach pendant holder to a rigid, stable surface within the robot cell, such as the controller cabinet or an operator station. Use appropriate M4 hardware for the mounting surface.

Step 2: Route the Pendant Cable

Carefully route the pendant cable from the holder to the robot controller. Use cable ties to secure the cable along its path, leaving a service loop with sufficient slack for operator movement.

Warning: Do not exceed the minimum bend radius of the cable. Kinking the cable can damage internal wiring.

Step 3: Open Controller Cabinet

Following all safety procedures, unlock and open the robot controller cabinet door to access the internal connection panel.

Warning: Only qualified personnel should open the controller cabinet. Ensure an anti-static wrist strap is worn.

Step 4: Connect the Pendant to the Controller

Locate the designated HMI port on the controller's main board or interface panel. Align the keyway on the pendant's connector and insert it firmly until the locking mechanism clicks into place.

Warning: Do not force the connection. Forcing an improperly aligned connector can damage the pins on both the cable and the controller.

Step 5: Secure Cable Strain Relief

Fasten the pendant cable to the controller's integrated strain relief clamp. This prevents tension on the connector if the cable is accidentally pulled.

Step 6: Close and Secure Controller Cabinet

Close the controller cabinet door, ensuring all seals are properly seated. Secure all latches or screws to maintain the cabinet's environmental protection rating.

Step 7: Power On and Verify Initialization

Remove the LOTO device and restore main power to the robot controller. The NexBot Drives 221-018 Teach Pendant will begin its boot sequence automatically. Observe the screen for a successful startup and communication link confirmation.

Warning: Ensure all personnel are clear of the robot's work envelope before applying power to the system.

4. Post-Installation Verification

  1. Verify that the pendant's Emergency Stop (E-Stop) button is functional by pressing it and confirming the robot controller enters a stop state.
  2. Test the 3-position enabling switch to ensure it allows motion only in the center position.
  3. Check that all joystick axes and function keys are responsive by navigating the pendant's diagnostic menus.
  4. Confirm the touchscreen is calibrated correctly by touching several points on the screen.
  5. Load a basic program and jog the robot at low speed to ensure full control.
  6. Check the controller's event log for any communication errors related to the HMI.
