Article

The NexBot Drives 341-006 Thermal Camera is a high-precision sensor designed for demanding industrial environments. Proper maintenance is critical to ensure its longevity, measurement accuracy, and reliable operation. Contaminants on the lens, loose connections, or improper mounting can lead to inaccurate temperature readings and communication failures. This guide outlines the standard procedures for maintaining the NXB-SNS-341-006.

Schedule

The required maintenance frequency depends on the operational environment. Adhere to the following schedule as a baseline and adjust based on observed conditions.

  • Daily/Per Shift: Visual Inspection
  • Briefly inspect the camera lens for heavy contamination (e.g., weld spatter, oil, heavy dust) that could obstruct the view.
  • Monthly (Clean Environments) / Weekly (Harsh Environments): Lens Cleaning & Housing Inspection
  • Perform a detailed cleaning of the camera's germanium lens.
  • Wipe down the camera housing.
  • Annually: Connection & Mounting Integrity Check
  • Inspect the GigE Vision M12 connector for security and integrity.
  • Verify the torque of the mounting hardware.

Parts Needed

  • Consumables:
  • Reagent-grade Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), 99% or higher purity.
  • Lint-free optical grade lens wipes or a clean, unused microfiber cloth.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
  • Nitrile gloves (to prevent skin oils from contaminating the lens).
  • Safety glasses.

Procedure

WARNING: Ensure the robot cell is powered down and all appropriate Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures are followed before beginning any maintenance work.

Step 1: Safety and Preparation

  1. Power down the robot controller and any associated equipment according to your facility's safety protocols.
  2. Apply LOTO devices to the main power source.
  3. Put on your required PPE, including safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Lens Cleaning

The germanium lens of the NXB-SNS-341-006 has a special anti-reflective coating that can be damaged by abrasive materials or harsh chemicals. Use only the recommended procedure.

  1. Remove Loose Debris: If there is loose dust or particulate on the lens, use a low-pressure bulb blower (not canned air) to gently blow it off. Do not wipe a dry, dusty lens, as this will scratch the coating.
  2. Apply IPA: Moisten a fresh, lint-free optical wipe with a small amount of 99%+ isopropyl alcohol. Do not apply alcohol directly to the lens.
  3. Wipe the Lens: Using a single, continuous motion, gently wipe the lens from the center to the outer edge in a spiral pattern. Do not apply significant pressure.
  4. Dry the Lens: Use a second, dry lint-free wipe to gently blot any remaining alcohol from the lens surface. The remaining IPA should evaporate cleanly within a few seconds.
  5. Inspect: Visually inspect the lens under good lighting to ensure no streaks, smudges, or contaminants remain. Repeat the process with fresh wipes if necessary.

Step 3: Housing Inspection

The NXB-SNS-341-006 features an IP67-rated housing (95 x 55 x 50 mm). While robust, it should be kept clean.

  1. Use a soft cloth, slightly dampened with water or a mild detergent, to wipe down the exterior of the camera housing.
  2. Inspect the housing for any signs of physical damage, such as cracks or deep gouges, that could compromise the IP67 seal.

Step 4: Annual Connection & Mounting Check

  1. Connector Inspection: Visually inspect the GigE Vision M12 connector. Ensure it is fully seated and the locking collar is tight. Check the cable for signs of wear, abrasion, or damage, particularly at stress points.
  2. Mounting Hardware Check: The camera is typically mounted at the J6 position on compatible robots (e.g., NexBot R-20, R-50, C-5, C-10 series). Using a calibrated torque wrench, verify that the mounting bolts are tightened to the correct specification. For standard M4 mounting bolts, the recommended torque is 3.5 Nm (31 in-lbs). Do not over-tighten, as this can damage the camera housing.

Verification

  1. Remove all tools and materials from the robotic cell.
  2. Following facility safety protocols, remove LOTO devices and power the system back on.
  3. Launch the robot control software and open the vision system interface for the NXB-SNS-341-006.
  4. Confirm that a stable GigE Vision connection is established and a live thermal image is being displayed.
  5. Verify the image is clear and free of artifacts, smudges, or obstructions that would indicate an incomplete cleaning.
  6. If possible, aim the camera at a known temperature reference point to confirm that readings are within the expected range, ensuring measurement accuracy has not been compromised.
