1.0 Introduction
This document outlines the official procedure for the installation and handling of the NexBot Safety 822-012 Protective Arm Sleeve (SKU: NXB-GEN-822-012). This sleeve is designed to protect the surfaces and joints of NexBot industrial robot arms from environmental contaminants such as dust, debris, weld spatter, and fluids, thereby extending the service life of the robot.
Adherence to these guidelines is critical to ensure the sleeve provides maximum protection without impeding the robot's operational range of motion or creating a safety hazard.
2.0 Safety Precautions
Before beginning any installation or maintenance procedure, ensure all facility-specific safety protocols are followed.
- Power Down: The robot controller must be powered down, and a full lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedure must be completed.
- Release Stored Energy: Verify that all pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical energy has been safely discharged from the robot arm and any end-of-arm tooling (EOAT).
- Secure the Arm: Position the robot arm in a safe, stable position for service. If necessary, use certified mechanical supports to prevent unexpected movement.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves during the installation process.
3.0 Installation Procedure
3.1 Prerequisites
- Inspect the Sleeve: Before installation, carefully inspect the NexBot Safety 822-012 Protective Arm Sleeve for any manufacturing defects, tears, or damage that may have occurred during shipping. Do not install a damaged sleeve.
- Clean the Robot Arm: The robot arm surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease or oil. Use a lint-free cloth and an approved isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution to wipe down all surfaces that will be covered by the sleeve.
- Position the Robot: Manually articulate the robot into a fully extended or 'home' position that provides the easiest access to all joints. This minimizes stretching and bunching of the sleeve material during installation.
3.2 Step-by-Step Installation
- Unpack and Orient: Lay the sleeve flat and orient it according to the markings or labels that indicate the 'base' and 'flange' ends. Identify all fastening mechanisms (e.g., zippers, hook-and-loop straps).
- Initial Fitting: Begin at the wrist flange (J6). Carefully slide the opening of the sleeve over the end of the robot arm. If EOAT is installed, it may need to be removed first.
- Advance the Sleeve: Gently and evenly work the sleeve up the arm towards the robot base. Do not use excessive force, as this can damage the material. Ensure the sleeve is not twisted and that any seams are aligned with the primary axes of the arm segments.
- Fit Over Joints: As you approach each axis (J5, J4, J3, etc.), take care to properly seat the articulated sections of the sleeve over the corresponding robot joints. The sleeve is tailored to accommodate joint movement, so proper alignment is crucial.
- Secure Fasteners: Once the sleeve is fully positioned, secure all fastening mechanisms. Start with the primary zipper or closure running the length of the sleeve. Then, secure any hook-and-loop straps around the joints, base, and wrist flange. Straps should be snug but not overly tight, as this can restrict motion.
4.0 Verification
After installation, a thorough verification must be performed before returning the robot to service.
- Visual Inspection: Check that the sleeve is properly seated, all fasteners are secure, and there is no visible bunching or twisting that could get caught in nearby equipment.
- Manual Motion Check: Carefully and slowly move the robot arm by hand through its entire range of motion for each axis. Pay close attention to joints J1 through J6. Feel for any signs of binding, stretching, or resistance from the sleeve.
- Low-Speed Test: After completing LOTO removal, power on the robot and run a pre-existing routine at a very low speed (10% or less). Observe the robot and sleeve to confirm that there is no interference with the robot's programmed path.
If any binding is detected, immediately stop the robot, perform the LOTO procedure, and adjust the sleeve's fit.
5.0 Removal and Maintenance
To remove the sleeve, reverse the installation process. Always perform a full LOTO procedure before removal.
The NXB-GEN-822-012 sleeve can be cleaned with a damp, lint-free cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Routinely inspect the sleeve for wear, punctures, or tears, and replace it if its protective integrity is compromised.
