Article

This document outlines the official maintenance and lubrication procedures for the NexBot Robotics CYC123-007 Cycloidal Gearbox, part number NXB-GEN-822-006. Proper lubrication is critical to achieving the expected service life and maintaining the near-zero backlash performance of this high-precision component, which is integral to NexBot R-100 series robots and other demanding applications.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines can result in premature wear, increased backlash, and potential joint failure, voiding the product warranty.

Lubricant Specification

Only NexBot-approved lubricants are certified for use in the CYC123-007 gearbox. The use of non-specified lubricants can lead to incompatible chemical reactions with seals and reduced performance under load.

  • Approved Lubricant: Refer to the primary service manual for your specific robot model (e.g., R-100 series) for the exact lubricant part number. The standard specification is typically a high-performance synthetic grease designed for cycloidal drive mechanics.
  • Quantity: The required volume of grease varies depending on the joint position (J1-J6) and orientation. Always consult the robot's primary maintenance manual for the precise fill volume.
  • Handling: Before use, verify the expiration date on the lubricant container. Do not use expired lubricants. Store lubricants in a clean, dry environment at the recommended temperature.

Maintenance Schedule

The following schedule is recommended for typical single-shift industrial operations. Environments with extreme temperatures, high cycle rates, or heavy contamination may require more frequent intervals.

| Interval | Task | | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | First 500 Operating Hours | Initial Inspection: Check for lubricant leaks around seals and plugs. Listen for any abnormal operating noise. | | Every 2,000 Operating Hours| Routine Inspection: Repeat the inspection for leaks and abnormal noise. | | Every 8,000 Operating Hours| Grease Replacement: Perform a complete drain and refill of the gearbox lubricant. |

Lubrication Procedure

This procedure must be performed by a certified technician familiar with NexBot robotics systems.

1. Safety and Preparation

  • Execute all local Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures to de-energize the robot system completely.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves.
  • Position the robot arm to provide clear access to the designated drain and fill plugs for the target joint. The optimal orientation is typically specified in the robot's service manual to ensure a complete drain.
  • Thoroughly clean the exterior surface of the gearbox around the plugs to prevent contamination.

2. Draining the Gearbox

  • Place a suitable oil drain pan beneath the drain plug.
  • Carefully remove the lower drain plug first, followed by the upper fill/vent plug. Removing the upper plug allows air to enter the gearbox, facilitating a smooth and complete drain.
  • Allow the lubricant to drain completely. This may take up to 30 minutes.
  • Inspect the drained lubricant for signs of metal shavings or other contaminants, which may indicate internal wear.

3. Filling the Gearbox

  • Clean the threads of the drain plug and its seating surface. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it using a torque wrench to the value specified in the robot's service manual. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
  • Using a clean, dedicated grease gun, slowly inject the specified volume of new, approved lubricant into the fill port.
  • Injecting slowly minimizes the risk of creating air pockets within the gearbox.

4. Final Assembly and Verification

  • Once the correct volume is added, clean the threads of the fill plug, reinstall it, and tighten to the specified torque value.
  • Wipe away any excess lubricant from the gearbox exterior.
  • After completing the procedure and removing LOTO, power on the robot in a low-speed manual mode.
  • Carefully move the serviced joint through its entire range of motion several times to ensure the new lubricant is evenly distributed.
  • Listen for any abnormal noises and check for smooth, consistent motion.
  • Perform a final visual inspection around the plugs to confirm there are no leaks.
  • Update the robot's maintenance log with the date, operating hours, and work performed.

Important Notes

  • The NXB-GEN-822-006 is an IP65-rated component. To maintain this rating, ensure all plugs and seals are correctly installed and torqued to specification.
  • Always refer to the comprehensive service manual for the specific robot model for detailed diagrams, torque specifications, and lubricant part numbers.
